Complete Guide: Which DSC Do You Need in 2025?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is mandatory for most interactions with Indian government portals — GST, MCA, Income Tax, EPFO, e-tendering, and import-export filings. But with several certificate types on the market, first-time buyers often purchase the wrong one. This guide explains every DSC type sold in India in 2025 and tells you exactly which one fits your use case.

The short answer

If you are an individual filing GST, ITR, or MCA forms, buy a Class 3 Individual Signature DSC. If you sign on behalf of a company, LLP, or firm, buy a Class 3 Organization DSC. If you participate in e-tenders on GeM, IREPS, or state procurement portals, you need a Class 3 Combo (Signature + Encryption). If you run an import-export business, you need a DGFT DSC for the DGFT portal in addition to your regular Class 3 certificate.

Class 3 Individual DSC

This is the standard certificate for individuals — salaried professionals, proprietors, freelancers, chartered accountants, and company directors signing in their personal capacity. It is issued in your name after Aadhaar eKYC verification and works on every major portal: GST registration and returns, Income Tax e-filing, DIR-3 KYC on MCA, EPFO claims, and trademark or patent filings on IP India. Prices start around ₹899 for one year.

Class 3 Organization DSC

An Organization DSC links your identity to your company, LLP, partnership, or firm. The certificate carries the organization's name along with the authorised signatory's name, which several portals require for company-level filings — ROC annual returns, GST filings signed as the company, ICEGATE customs submissions, and e-procurement registrations. Expect to pay from ₹1,099 for one year, and note that the organization's PAN and an authorisation letter are part of the verification.

Signature vs Encryption vs Combo

A Signature certificate proves who signed a document and that it was not altered. An Encryption certificate lets portals encrypt documents so only you can decrypt them — this is how e-tender portals protect your bid documents until the opening date. A Combo certificate bundles both keys on one token. E-tendering platforms such as GeM, CPPP, and IREPS mandate both signing and encryption, which is why bidders must buy the Combo. If you never bid on tenders, a plain Signature certificate is enough.

DGFT DSC for import-export businesses

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade runs its own PKI requirements. A DGFT DSC is a special Class 3 certificate that carries your Import Export Code (IEC) and is the only certificate the DGFT portal accepts for IEC applications, amendments, AD code registration, and foreign trade scheme filings. It is issued only to organizations holding an IEC, with prices starting around ₹2,199.

Foreign National DSC

Foreign directors of Indian companies, NRI applicants without Aadhaar-linked mobiles, and foreign nationals doing business in India cannot complete standard Aadhaar eKYC. A Foreign National DSC uses passport-based verification and video KYC instead. It is functionally a Class 3 certificate, valid on MCA and other portals, but the documentation and price differ — typically from ₹8,999 owing to embassy attestation and manual verification steps.

What about Class 2?

Class 2 DSCs were discontinued by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA): since January 2021, all certificates are issued at the Class 3 verification standard. Any website still advertising Class 2 certificates is showing outdated information.

Validity: 1, 2 or 3 years?

Every DSC type is sold with 1, 2, or 3 year validity. The per-year cost drops sharply with longer validity — a 3-year Class 3 Individual DSC at ₹1,799 costs less than half per year compared with renewing a 1-year certificate three times. Unless you expect your details to change, 2-year validity is the sweet spot for most buyers.
