How to Use Your DSC on GST Portal - Step by Step

10 December 2024

Companies and LLPs must sign GST returns with a Digital Signature Certificate, and many proprietors prefer DSC signing over OTP-based EVC. This tutorial walks you through registering your DSC on the GST portal and fixing the most common errors.

What you need before starting

You need a valid Class 3 DSC on a USB token (ePass 2003, Proxkey, MToken, TrustKey, or SafeNet), the token's driver installed on your computer, the emSigner utility from the GST portal, and the PAN of the authorised signatory already added on your GST registration.

Step 1: Install your USB token driver

Plug in your token. Most ePass 2003 Auto tokens install themselves on Windows. For other brands, download the driver from our Downloads page, run the installer, and restart the browser. To confirm installation, open the token manager application and check that your certificate is listed.

Step 2: Install emSigner

Log in to gst.gov.in, go to Register / Update DSC, and you will find the emSigner download link. Install it, then right-click the emSigner icon and run it as administrator. It must show 'server running' on port 1585 before the portal can talk to your token.

Step 3: Register your DSC

On the GST dashboard, open Dashboard > Register / Update DSC. Select the PAN of the authorised signatory, tick the consent box, and click Proceed. A popup lists the certificates on your connected token — select yours, enter the token PIN, and the portal confirms 'DSC registered successfully'.

Step 4: Sign a return with DSC

When filing GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B, choose 'File with DSC' on the verification screen. Pick your certificate from the popup, enter the PIN, and the portal records the filing with an ARN instantly.

Fixing common errors

'Failed to establish connection to the server'

emSigner is not running or is blocked. Quit it from the system tray, run it again as administrator, and allow it through Windows Firewall. Chrome users should also confirm no other application occupies ports 1585, 2095, 2568, 2868, or 4587.

Certificate not appearing in the popup

Reinsert the token, confirm the driver sees it, and ensure the certificate has not expired. If you renewed recently, deregister the old DSC under Register / Update DSC and register the new one.

'PAN verification failed'

The PAN encoded in your DSC must exactly match the authorised signatory's PAN on the GST registration. If you bought the DSC with a different PAN, the portal will reject it — contact your DSC provider for re-issuance with the correct PAN.
