How to Renew Your Digital Signature Certificate

A Digital Signature Certificate cannot be extended — renewal means issuing a fresh certificate with new validity. The process is quick, but timing matters: once your old DSC expires, you lose signing access to GST, MCA, and tender portals until the new one is registered.

When should you renew?

Start the renewal 1-2 weeks before expiry. The new certificate's validity starts from its issuance date, so renewing early does not waste the remaining days in any meaningful way, and it guarantees zero disruption around filing deadlines. Most CAs and resellers, including SignSecure, send expiry reminders — do not ignore the 30-day one.

What the renewal process looks like

Renewal is procedurally identical to a new application: choose the certificate type and validity, complete Aadhaar eKYC (OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile), make the payment, and download the new certificate. Since your identity details are verified afresh, there is no dependency on the expiring certificate — you can even renew an already-expired DSC.

Can you reuse your USB token?

Yes. If your existing token is a FIPS-certified device (ePass 2003, Proxkey, MToken, TrustKey, SafeNet 5100) and is physically healthy, the new certificate downloads onto it alongside or replacing the old one. This is why renewals are cheaper than first purchases — you skip the ₹500 token cost. If the token is lost or damaged, buy a new one and the certificate downloads there instead.

After renewal: re-register everywhere

Portals bind your account to a specific certificate, not to you. After downloading the renewed DSC, re-register it: on GST, use Register / Update DSC; on MCA, update the DSC against your DIN or PAN under 'Update DSC'; on tender portals, map the new certificate in your bidder profile. Until you do this, the portals will keep rejecting your signature with a 'certificate mismatch' error.
