ePass 2003 vs Proxkey vs MToken: Which USB Token Should You Buy?

Every Digital Signature Certificate issued in India must be stored on a FIPS-certified USB crypto token. The three tokens you will most commonly be offered are the ePass 2003 Auto, the WatchData Proxkey, and the MToken. All three do the same fundamental job — store your private key in tamper-proof hardware — but they differ in drivers, compatibility quirks, and build quality.

ePass 2003 Auto: the default choice

Manufactured by HyperSecu, the ePass 2003 holds the largest market share in India by a wide margin. Its biggest advantage is the auto-detect driver: on Windows, you plug it in and it installs itself, which removes the single most common support headache. It is FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certified, supports RSA 2048-bit keys, works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and every Certifying Authority lists it as a supported device. At around ₹500, it is also among the cheapest.

Proxkey: the solid alternative

WatchData's Proxkey is the second most common token. It matches the ePass on certification (FIPS 140-2 Level 2) and CA support, and some users prefer its sturdier casing. The trade-off is that its driver usually requires manual installation, and macOS support is less polished. Pricing is comparable at roughly ₹500.

MToken: compact and budget-friendly

The MToken CryptoID is a compact token that has gained ground through aggressive pricing. It supports the same key sizes and portals, and its management utility is lightweight. Driver installation is manual, and because it is newer to the market, occasional portal-side quirks take slightly longer to get community fixes. It typically sells around ₹500 with an MRP near ₹899.

Choose Proxkey if you want a tougher shell, and MToken if you are buying in bulk and optimising cost.
